The diverse and fascinating world of the animal industry is growing all the time, making it an increasingly exciting industry to work in.

Through examinations, written work, and practical assessments, this course will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress into employment or further education in either Animal or Equine.

You will develop practical experience in our industry standard equine yard and animal unit.

You will study a range of animal and equine related subjects to develop a strong foundation of understanding to move onto level 2 if desired.

Course Information

  • Maintain the health of horses
  • Assist with the preparation for the exercise and after care of horses
  • Assist with the exercise of animals
  • Assist with the feeding and watering of Animals
  • Assist with the movement, handling and accommodation of animals
  • Assist with the handling and restraint of animals

You will need three GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent, including English and Maths. One satisfactory reference and a passion for the subject.

You will normally be in college three days a week.

  • Folder with dividers to organise your work and assignments
  • Stationery including notepad for use in class, pens and pencils
  • College-branded blue kennel coat
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including steel toe capped footwear (boots, shoes, or wellies)
  • Dark coloured waterproof outdoor clothing and appropriate footwear (for external work experience)
  • Jewellery and piercings must be removed for practical sessions
  • Dark coloured jodhpurs
This course provides you with the potential to progress to one of our Level 2 courses.
The course provides you with opportunities to seek a junior position in the equine industry, including grooms and yard workers. Other possibilities include volunteer or work as a Pet Shop Assistant, Kennels Assistant, Catteries Assistant, and many more.
