The course

This is a highly practical course that allows you to develop the core skills needed to work with animals and horses within the animal care industry.

You will be working on the colleges specialist Animal Management Centre as well as our Equine yard, learning how to care for a wide variety of animals and horses. This course features a range of practical and classroom study and will provide you with the skills needed to continue on to the next level of study or go straight into employment.

You will need a full Entry Level 3 qualification, or equivalent, as well as 3 GCSEs at grades 1, including Maths and English. A passion for the subject and one satisfactory reference are also required.

You will undertake internal work experience on our animal unit.
You will be assessed through coursework and practical assessments.
  • Folder with dividers to organise your work and assignments
  • Stationery including notepad for use in class, pens and pencils
  • College-branded blue kennel coat
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including steel toe capped footwear (boots, shoes, or wellies)
  • Waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear (for work experience).
Students can progress to one of the Level 2 Animal Care or Horse Care courses at the college.
Work as a Pet Shop Assistant, Kennels Assistant, Catteries Assistant, stable hand, Volunteering and many more.
