Celebrating a fantastic year of award-winning student success

14 Jan 2025 | College

The close of a year is a great opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our students and the exciting opportunities available to them. A number of students received accolades in prestigious awards during 2024 to acknowledge their hard work and dedication.

Equine student James Bowen was nominated for the prestigious Land-Based and Environment Learner Awards, which are organised by leading land-based training and qualification body Lantra. The awards celebrate and reward top performing individuals within a variety of land-based sectors including Agriculture, Animal Care and Management and Landscape and Horticulture.

James, who was one of three finalists from the college, was nominated for the Equine and Farriery category by Curriculum Lead for Equine Jess Guyver. On his nomination he said "I feel proud, privileged and honoured to be nominated for this award. I would like to thank my tutor Jess for nominating me."

James beat six other finalists in his category to be announced the winner at an awards ceremony in November. Jess commented “I am delighted that James’ commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for his subject has been recognised at these prestigious awards. Eight Land-based Engineering apprentices also had their hard work recognised at the Midlands Agricultural Apprenticeship Awards. Established in memory of the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society (NNAS) former president Geoffrey Bond, the Apprenticeship Awards aim to support young people as they develop their skills withing the agricultural engineering sector.

The eight award winning apprentices received a cash reward of £500 and certificate in recognition of their achievement. Elena Malloy Head of Land-based & Sport at the college said “This is an incredible result! To see eight of our apprentices recognised in the awards is testament to their hard-work and determination. It also demonstrates the positive impact of the apprenticeship programmes at the college in developing highly skilled and highly employable professionals of the future.”
